Art Fair Visitor Guide

Contemporary art has an obvious advantage - it is accessible! Galleries with almost always free entry are at your disposal. And the best of them (and therefore with the most interesting artists) gather in one place during fairs. To make your contact with art as productive as possible, we have prepared some tips: what, how, with whom and why to do at fairs (and then in galleries)
  • 1
    It's okay not to understand
The language of art is very different and it is impossible to be prepared for all its ways. There is always a person at the gallery stands who is ready to give you advice. Even if you are not ready to buy, ask about the work: the gallery owner is a guide, he will try to translate the artist's language for you
  • 2
    Ask for price
The art fair is the perfect place for this. Only here you can quickly find your way around the modern art market
  • 3
    Make contacts
You can share your contacts with the gallery and continue getting to know each other in a more quieter setting or at the next vernissage
  • 4
    Be aware of copyright
If you make content for social networks, it would be polite to mention the gallery or the author of the artwork
  • 5
    Don't touch
Direct interaction with the art object may damage it. You may not see the physical damage right away, but the long-term damage is real. Physical interaction with the artwork is justified only in two cases - if it is intended by the artist or if you are going to buy the artwork
  • 6
    Take off your backpack :)
An object behind your back may accidentally touch an artwork
  • 7
    Stop at two glasses
A little wine in a dialogue with art will not harm, but too much is dangerous. You could hit something even without a backpack
  • 8
    Respect Mediators and Guides
It is quite difficult to conduct so many excursions a day at a popular fair, but careful attention to the guide will help them do it with pleasure
  • 9
    Respect other visitors
This point can be expressed not only in direct interaction with other guests, but also when viewing the artworks: take a step back before viewing the artwork that interests you
  • 10
    For little visitors
If you are taking the kids, explain fair etiquette to them to ensure a comfortable experience for them and other guests. Also, don't forget to check out the children's program! High-level fairs always prepare something interesting for young guests
  • 11
    Check the program
The educational program has also been prepared for adults. Guests of discussions at the art fair can learn about current issues, ask their questions and meet leading experts of the art market in person. Don't forget to check the schedule in advance
  • 12
    Come in the morning
If you want to see and learn more, the optimal time for this is the first half of the day. There are a lot of people in the evening, and gallerists are less active
The most important thing is to analyze, compare and discuss the art you've seen! It's as valuable as purchasing a new artwork for your collection
